The next stop, Cedar Key, on my beach road trip through Florida was quite the drive from Apalachicola. Cedar Key is nationally known for its abundance of seafood, beautiful nature and history of the first Cross-Florida Railroad. Florida was provided with its first cross-state railroad in 1861 when the Florida Railroad Company line reached Cedar Key, making it the first railroad port on Florida`s west coast.
What to see?
Taking in the natural beauty, admiring the bird life and just enjoying the tranquility of this village should be your main focus. Take a stroll at the Fishing Pier and see all the Pelicans there. Wander along and browse the little shops and art galleries.
What else is there to do?
There are a few things to do like visiting the Cedar Key Historical Society Museum, Cedar Key Museum State Park, … or go for a hike or a bike ride. But the best thing to do is relax, you`re on island time here.
Where to stay?
We stayed at a rental house, which is the perfect stay for this village. As it is a quiet community, this is the place to take your family and friends, and enjoy some quality time together. A rental fits in well for this kind of vacation as you can all stay in one house and do your own thing when it comes to cooking. There is one local grocery store close by, but if you`re looking for the bigger brands like Walmart etc, you won`t find these.
Fun Fact
Probably the most important fact, the coastal town produces more than 50 procent of Florida`s clam crop, gathering 100 million clams each year.
If you want to read up on Florida, then check out my other stops on this trip at Pensacola, Panama City Beach and Apalachicola.
This trip was made possible with the support of Visit Florida. Special thanks to Levy County.
